Ayyavadi Sri Maha Prathyangira Devi

This temple for Sri Maha Prathyangira Devi is situated in a small village called Ayyavadi around 6 kms from Kumbakonam.

Located just 500 mts from Uppiliappan temple, this village was once called as Aivar Padi.According to legends, the 5 Pandavas visited this place, kept their weapons under a tree, worshipped Sri Maha Prathyangira Devi and went around in the forests. As the five Pandavas worshipped here, it is beleived that the place was called as Aivar Padi which later changed as Ayyavadi.

Lord Vishnu took the Narasimha Avatar to kill the demon king Hiranyakasipu who is the father of Prahalada. After being so furiously fought with so much of power to kill the king, the anger and the fierce of Narasimha didnt come down. With so much of hyper Narasimha couldn't make out between good and bad people and started disturbing everyone and no one could control him. People prayed Lord Shiva to save them.

Lord Shiva took a new and more powerful form or Avatar as Sarabeswara, with lion's face and eagle's wings. Shakthi accompanied Lord Shiva in the form of Sri Mahaprathyangira Devi seated on one of the wings of Sri Sarabeswara. Sarabeswarar went and subsided Narasimha's anger to bring back peace. Hence both Sri Mahaprathyangira Devi and Sri Sarabeswara are beleived to be more powerful than any other powers.

In Ramayana, Indrajit, son of Ravana performed a Yaga called "Nigumbalai Yagam", worshipping Sri Maha Prathyangira Devi. It is beleived that from this Ayyavadi he performed the Yaga. If he had completed the Yaga successfully, he would have got the powers to kill Rama.

But somehow it was spoiled by Lakshmana and Anjaneya before completion. Here the Devi is seated on the chariot with 4 lions, 8 arms with weapons possessing Lion's face.

Sri Maha Prathyangira Devi's worship will take away all evil forces and unsolvable problems from one's life. In this temple Homams are conducted every Full moon day and No moon day, after which huge volumes of Red Chillies are offered to the Goddess.

Sri Maha Prathyangira Devi is an important Goddess in Shakthi worship. There is a Gayatri Mantra too for worshipping Sri Maha Prathyangira Devi.

A rare and wonderful temple for Shakthi Devotees.

  1. Sakthi is an important member of the Hindu pantheon. Sakthi attained the highest in the puranas when she was enlisted in the Trinity along with Vishnu and Siva. In the Vedic literature and epics Sakthi occupied the dominating figure as she became the chief object of worship. Her importance can be seen from the fact that Sakthi was given apposition higher than that of Vishnu and Siva in such purans as the Devi Bhagavatha purana, the Devi puran, the Kalika purana and the Maha Bhagavatha purana. In the sectarian Upanishads, specially the Sakthi Upanishad she is accepted as supreme reality. Devi Pratyangari is worshipped along with Sarabeswarar.

  16. Most misunderstood devi, she is not a devatha for a common man to be dealt with. She was worshipped by persons like vasistha,18 siddhars etc. As most people think she is a parivaradevatha of SreeVidya, she is not. She is considered as the wife of Sarabheshwara, she is not but the daughter of Sarabhehwara and the wife of AgniBhahkshana Bhairava (from the name itself you can imagine ). She is the combined thejus & shakthi of UgraNarasimha and Sarabheshwara and she is the Para sakthi herself and Para vidya. The temple at Ayyavadi exists before and after Pralaya. She is the purest form of the entire Samhara Sakthi of the Absolute. She is the most loving mother. If you worship her genuinly she is an Anantha moorthy (giving eternal bliss ie Moksha),if she worshipped for wrong purpose the worshipper will have his end from her own hands. vijayamadhavans@gmail.com

  17. shanta : I was recommended this devi by an astroleger and I visited her temple last June before her kumbabishegam and again in December. Some force is pulling me to her. Before that I was given some misconceptions because of some politicians and some dreaded to come but now I know how gifted iam to have visited her. I would like to know why she is not that popular and why is she so elusive? Please give explanation. Thirunageswaram Rahu temple and uppiliappan temoles are thronged by hundreds of people everyday while this temple is not. What could be the reasons?

  18. Devi is usually worshipped by maha yogis, she is worshipped in a temple in the middle of a graveyard. That itself shows who she is...the mantra of her usually meant for the destruction. The destruction of one's own karmas which has been accumulated through your past lives and by thus attaining the purity of soul for the liberation from the cycle of birth & death. She has got a great meaning which is not mentioned ordinary mantra texts, her concept is usually known to maha yogis & maha gurus and is transferred to the desciples orally. She is the ultimate and by worshipping her unconditionaly without any selfishness will yeild the result that cannot be blocked. She is beyond the time & space, she is the Bhukthi Mukthi pradayani. vijayamadhavans@gmail.com

  19. Shanta: That was quite enlightening. How do we pray to her? Is reciting her gayathri enough or do we need more than that?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Gayathri is enough for ordinary type of worship, but for upasana your horoscope should support. There should be a relation between saturn & mars in the horoscope. Diksha should be given by a competent Guru. She is not an ordinary power to meddle with, great responsibilities lies ahead for the upasaks. Greatest the power, more the responsibility. With innocent & selfless devotion, the mantra devatha itself will grant you the opportunity for her sadhana.

Every New Moon day, “Nigumbala yagam” is conducted from 9 am to 1 pm. During the yagna, about 30 Kgs of red chilli is put into the sacred fire. But there will not be any smell, which is a speicality of this deity. Deities like Vinayaka, Subramanya, Thriyambaga rudra, Narasimha, Lakshmi, Navagrahas, Varagi, Bairavar, Sarabar, Choolini Durga and Maha Prathiyangara are offered with 108 varieties of herbals, varieties of fruits and silk sarees. More than 15 sivachariyars are performing the yagna and pooja. After the yagna, anna dhanam is offered to all the devotees.
No Hundi or donations in this temple.
U can giv flowers and Ghee and dry Chillies.

    1. I suggest visit all 3 Pratyangiraa Devi Temples in Tamil Nadu.

I am also visiting these temples for cleansing.

Consult a reputable astrologer and check for past life curses or karmic sins. Do various spiritual remedies as per his advice.

As follow-up do various puja & Homams:
Ganaphthi; Chandi; Sudarshana; Mriuntjaya; Ayusha; Pratyangira at your house and at various nearby temples and in Kerala and South India; a reputable priest or healer who comes to your house to do rituals can verify who or what entity may be doing black magic and evil spells on you and/or your house.

Good idea to get rid off or finish the black magician who did the evil spells to your family.

After confirming the black magic effect has been cleared do Lakshmi Kubera homams etc to increase luck.

Light many oil lamps with ghee and/or sesame oil for various Gods and Godesses in the house and light incences sticks etc

You can reach Kumbakonam by Myladuthurai Express (every day)from Bangalore. From Kumbakonam you have to reach Thirunageswaram (Rahu temple) after visiting this temple, you can walk down to Uppliappan Koil (considered as South Tirupati). From Uppliappan Koil, you can catch auto to Ayyavadi (Prityangira) temple (auto fare is Rs. 30 and Rs. 60 for up & down). Many buses ply from Kumbakonam to Uppliappan Koil. Rarely buses go to Ayyavadi also.

  52. Namaste...those who are near Bangalore and Mysore may also try having their homas performed at Pratyangeera Bhagavati Temple, Sarada Niketana, Beerihundi, about 20 km from Mysore. It is not so difficult to locate. The directions are: First locate Peridot Inn on the KRS road, Mysore (it will be to your left as you are going towards Hunsur)...and at this point, turn left and go straight from Peridot Inn until you reach a corner-side petrol pump to your right (I think it is 2nd signal/circle). Take the right turn from there & proceed straight until you see a signboard to your right that says *Setty nayakana halli.*

All of this distance should be about 18-20 km total. The roads from the petrol pump onwards are like village roads but very motorable.

Almost as soon as you enter this lane...you will be able to see a small temple, the priest's home and the orphanage that his family runs. Please go and seek this swamiji's guidance on your issues.

For more details, please see this link: http://pratyangirabhagavati.org

    1. Which temple are you talking about - the one near Mysore? Yes, it is Rs. 7000 but it has to be fixed prior by the persons desiring a homa. Regards dress code, any dress is fine per the Swamiji there. You don't have to purchase any homa materials yourself. They do it all themselves once the amount is deposited. Red chillies? No idea...we did not see any red chillies being used while there. All this pertains ...in case you were talking about the Mysore temple.

      Delete
    2. To clarify further....you can deposit the amount only if you get the go-ahead by the Swamiji. Try the morning times - they are easier to get. Having your calls answered in the evenings is near-impossible because they might be busy with someone's homa after sunset. Normally homas there are scheduled in the evenings...per our observation. Better still, why don't you first go there yourself and get a feel of the place/people....and then fix up a date?

People have nicely explained Pratyangira Mata at their own, but the sole depth crux of our Goddess is as to how far we Hindus devote ourselves by valuing our traditional Parayanam of Shri Durga Saptashati at its length.

My humble submission is the extent we motivate ourselves in this Parayan or even make a Dhyan for a second, to that extent we will awaken ourselves at its natural by understanding ourselves towards this Aadi God Mother.

Well done devotees and I hope we people following this everlasting traditional hindu system with its value and sacred importance will increase day by day by we public.

May God Mother Pratyangira Devi(Kaali Maai) shower all her blessings - Aasheerwaadam to all of us for our long prospering life with honesty, diligence, sense of responsiveness, workmanship, learnedness.

    Iti shuham

    Namaskar,

Pratyangira Mata (Durga Saptashati Kaalimaai)- Ayyawaadi - the greatest of all and over and above, it was on 2nd of June'2009 at madras when on the pious occasion of Ganga Dashehra Tithi visited your place and chanted the parayan of Saptashati and thus you have made me recollected the same day on 30th of May'2012 the same pious Dashami Tithi fallen and the people of Narmada prayed a huge humble for her Excellency.

    I am to explain -

yaa devi sarva bhutshu maatra ruup[en sansthita - namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

May Her Lord Excellency Goddes Pratyangira Devi may shower all her blessings and aasheerwadam on all the hindus on this pious occasion of Ganga Dashehra and followed by tomorrow Pournami on 04th of June'2012.

    with regards & namaskar,

In A.P one Devi Upasak Sri Y.V.Sastry of Hyderabad has been the devotee of the Goddess and performs pratyangira Homam on every Pournami and Amavasya. He collects only Rs.2000/- towards pooja dravyas. It is believed that Devi Pratyangira fulfils the eepsitaas of her bhaktas upon performing Homam. 72. As i have mentioned in the earlier posts that Ma is not a common deity to be dealt with, it's one of the most secretive upasana vidya ( guhhia vidya ) which can only dealt with the highest reverence and sublimation. You shouldn't see devi as the solutions for witch craft, as she is the wife of shsrabheshwara ( by a mistake i made her as the daughter and i render thousand apologies for that ) who is the pralayakalagni rudra and she is the pralayakalakalpa bandini ie.. after the pralaya she is the one who breaks the inertia. She is absolutely chastic ( pathivritha ) and one who worship ma should seek the blessings of sharabheshwara. Each and every miseries & suffering's we are facing is only due to our karmic imprints from the previous birth's and this birth also. Inorder to overcome this we surrender ourselves before this supreme deity with 100% sincerity, sublimation, truth and innocence and pray her to protect you without any vengeance to any body and mother will take care of you. You shouldn't deal with this devi for settling personnel vendettas since it may back fire on you. Don't expect after doing some japas for some days devi will appear before you, it only depends upon how much pure you are, truthfull, sincere & innocent..May Ma Mahapratiangira bless you all & protect you always.....

  74. can any one suggest good hotels and lodges in kumbakonam which are reasonable priced and are at a close distance and accessible to ayyavadi temple.

  75. I absolutely agree with Vijaya madhavan. She should not be taken granted for solving trivial problems and personal vendetta or taking revenge. That's the reason even the temple authorities have put up a sign there warning people not to toy with her as it could back fire . She is not like any other goddess. If we submit and surrender to her with all our heart and soul she herself would make ways for you. She is not the goddess for the current fashion fad. "Just because every body is going I too want to go' is not for this Devi. Not everyone in this world can be affected by witch craft. Your horoscope will have certain planets in certain position to be afflicted by it. Just because we are going through a bad spell does'nt mean somebody had cast some black magic. It is our past karma which cannot be absolved. We have to go through it. The only thing you can ask for is the mental courage and calmness to overcome our anger, frustration, disappointment and deal with our life rationally planning what to do next. Devi is a god for eternity.

    1. Thanks...She is one of the most revered secretive vidya's by siddhar's and the enemies here are the previous birth karma's which are the reasons for the present birth. If you do worship of her in this aspect she will be the Anantha moorthi ( moorthi of supreme bliss ) or else worshipping her in a negative way to settle the scores, she will be a Arukanda Moorthy ( destroy the upasak himself ). In Nikumbila Yaga she appeared before Indrajith and assured him moksha rather than victory in the war which was against the justice. It's very saddening to see that people now a days are toying with her due to the ignorance of this Para-vidya and will invite miseries...

    2. since 2 yrs i have been hearing voices due to which i had to leave my job and my MBA. These voices talk in hindi. they read my thought loud in a male or female voice and manipulate my thoughts. This goes on on the road, everywhere. They called me dirty names and this is still on.In the night or when i sleep i feel like someone puts some hindi song know unknow song, i can hear this within my head, voices speaking from within my head (known and unknown voices). In interior places the voices are low. It all started 2 yrs back when every night a man and lady would speak to me at night and ask me things, i felt like kind of energy being pulled from my chest. It was a very traumatic experience. Pls can u figure out if this is black magic or what.. i have been to many spiritual people for help,, but not much..

  81. Shri Ramajayam
    The 22nd October,2012

    All my Dear Respected visitors/devotees,

The Holy Navaratri is at its full swing and thus our Mother Goddess Pratyangira Maata( Kaali Mai) has arrived to bestow all her blessings on us. So lets welcome us welcome her cheerfully and happily by saying:

Yaa Devi Sarva Bhuteshu Maatra Rupen
    Santhita-
    Namastasyai ........ Namo Namah

After perusing so many views by so many devotees/public in general unaware of this simple Goddess, I am to submit as under to be a guidance and also clarification in your day to day reading of this Goddess:

    1. Basically, Our Godess is another way Swayambhoo Lord Shiva and with all senitiveness and seriousness. This being modern culture with all advancement, people wont follow all the prima facie ethics need to be rigidly followed by ladies is that they wont follow Teetu etc which is a basic ingredient while visiting our Goddess or doing Pooja.

    2. Our Goddess carries aggressivenes by showing her reaction then and there by way of her divine supreme intution, hence it is highly recommended to avoid Non-vegetarian stuff total while we visit here to pay a Homage or darshan - may do Pooja or not.

    3. Most of the people are not totally aware about this high supreme that this is a total Dosha Nivritti curer of Chandra Dosha basically i.e. the position of a Moon in a given horoscope which most of we sounth indian wont follow at its seriousness resulting in unhappy marital bliss thereby making the life suffering from ends. We are aware that Moon in general gets waxing and waning for 15 days in a month calling as Pournami and Amawas. However, our Goddess Mother being Swayambhu(Lord Shiva)herself, doing Calm Chanting by keeping ourselves away from outside eadables etc., taking a home made Patthiya food and putting a simple Vibhuthi and a bow down before her or a Lord Shiva, would help you all in a greater way by coming up the baasic Dosha of Moon planet and can get recovered fastly for marital bliss.

    4. While we offer clothes etc to her Highness while visit her, always have a Red or Yellow one and not black.

    5. As explained in Amawas, she goes aggriessive on Pournami too when her pious Chilly Homam goes on making one annoyed at once which may be avoided at all cost, but however, paying a serious attention by calming down self, the things would go normal.

    6. This being Navaratri, and her Excellency Supreme gets awakened herself for all the 09 days by taking a small rest, shower all her blessings and asheerwadam on all of us, hence, with this greater basic I have submitted for your guidance.

    5. Being a Railway staff, I had several occasions to visit our Her Excellency Lord Pratyangira (Kaali Mai) Temple at SholingaNellur /Madras in these years for a humble bow down. My submission is people unable to visit Ayyawadi near Kumbakonam( 03 KMs away only), may not get disheartened to pay her a visit, however, may visit Madras conveniently in all the 365 days and have her blessings on Normal and Festival Days as well.

May our Lord Pratyangira Maata shower all her blessigs and asheerwaadam to all the Hindus all the world over on this pious festival - SHUBH NAVARATRI.

With Best Regards & Namaskarams to all of you.

    1. I am a 37 yr Christian lady, one night i started hearing voices and a ladys voice asking me questions and i felt like some energy being forcefully pulled from my chest, a mans voice spoke directly into my ears, after this for the last 2 yrs I could hear diff voices because of which I lost my job and could not continue my MBA. The voices go on on the road, at home, in my head. I am unable to take up a job.I think they have spoilt my ears as i sometimes hear some loud noise that does not allow me to sit at home or in a closed room. Every night the voices say things. They read out my thought loud and manipulate it as well. If i meet someone the voice of that person says bad and negative things in the night or anytime in the day. I feel like something has been put in my head at different places.

Pls suggest a remedy. I have started chanting the name of Jai Pratyangira maa. Pls let me know if i can chant a mantra for this problem and which mantra.

  83. well, I am from Nepal and just 12 days earlier only i visited this site and came to know about the devi and her blessings. So at bed time i often do pray gods/goddess before i sleep. and similarly, i chanted devi Pratyangira to ward off all the evil spirits and negative energies from my body/soul and my home. Soon after within a minute i felt something moving (circulating) inside my belly, where i was having severe pain whenever i lay down, for last nine years (during my first pregnancy) and after few seconds, i again felt as if something was going out from my belly. I had not expected that this movement was removing that nine years old pain from my body. From that night i do not have that pain inside me anylonger. Now i can sit and lay down however i like. before that day if i mistakenly lay down for few minutes, my son and husband would have to help me to get up from that position. I am really blessed by the divine devi at my first request and it's really miracle happening of my life. I am regularly chanting her all the time i remember her and pray her to give every human being happy and healthy life forever. I shall visit her temple definitely if i get a chance to visit India in future.

    1. My mild suggestion is:

Move around and get various viewpoints and suggestions etc

Read the Holy books of various religions not only Hinduism.

Pray to your Kula Deivam and Ishta Deivam eg Siva Shakthi

Make some vows to your favourite God or Godesses.

Do various pujas , homams in your house after borrow from bank or friends.
      eg Ganapathy; Chandi; Sudarshana; Mriunthjaya; Lakshmi-Kubera;

and then when get more cash; fulfil your vows and perform elaborate rituals and prayers and thanksgiving to the Gods that helped you.

      Execute your worst enemies without getting caught by the police or Government; there are many killer crews that murder for money discreetly;

    2. 15 Homas? from my understanding, each Homa just for us is abt 40000rupees from my experience...not the mass one which falls on Amavasya which is 7000-8000rup,
One Homa is supposed to be more than enough, what the hell the priest meant by 15 Homa,
if so, i dare say the priest is just a cheater and money is his motive, lots and lots of Spiritual Purity is messed with the craze of Money.
Look here ,Homa is done by some priests and it is the believe that lies within us that drives us, Goddess Pratyagira Devi is neutral and unbiased, so what if u dont perform the 15 Homa, so what if u dont perform a Homa, as long you make ur way to the temple, believe in what you are doing , be sincere pray to her, maybe just donate from ur strength for what you can to the donation box. Go elsewhere buy around 50 food packets give to the needy or some cloth or simple saree give to those elderly ladies or beggars, their good word will lead u to what you want. Ask yourself, is the Homa becoming too commercialized in the hidden motive of making money,
even a Ganapathi Homa is fine, pray to
Ma Pratyagira Devi, Homa is subjective, esp 15 Homa

      Delete
    3. sincere pray to her and sit near homa when any one is doing and do pradakshina if we cannot afford Homa

    The 08th October'2013.

    Namaskar all the visitors/devotees -

The Navaraatri Festival of this Goddess Pratyangira has commenced from 05th of October'2013 onwards with a pious horoscope Muhurt at 06.00 am in the morning simultaneously our one of the Hugest Dwaadash Jyotirlig at Kedarnath has been commenced for public visit by re-opening the same - i.e. Poojaas have re-started after a long span of 3 1/2 months i.e. the severest sky blast incident of 17.06.2013 and around a lakhs of people lost their lives. however, most of them have been found and still so many are absconding even today. The greatness of our God and Goddess is that we Hindus could re-commence our Pooja at a much shorter interval. We all Hindu devotees visiting our Pratyangira must especially during Navaraatri while bowing ourselves - should definitely make a humble pious submission before our Goddess for getting early recovery of many of our Hindus absconding, early prosperity of the entire surrounding got destructed totally during this instant sky blast - with a speedy attainment of normalcy of temple and also the general public visiting the atmosphere to have the highest darshan - once in our sacred life being Hindus - that too this Shivaling being situated at the Himalaya Mountains - i.e. to say - Himaalaye tu Kedaram .................................... Submitted with regards and submissions.
